10DLC

This article highlights the key steps for completing VXT’s 10DLC registration, including submitting your business details, website or social page, and SMS consent method for provider review.

To send SMS messages to U.S. mobile numbers via VXT, you must complete the 10DLC registration. This is a requirement set by U.S. carriers to reduce spam and ensure legitimate businesses are verified before sending messages.

Note: If you do not need SMS capabilities, registration is not necessary.

In this article, we’ll cover:

Understanding 10DLC

10DLC stands for 10-Digit Long Code, the standard local phone numbers used for business texting in the United States.

U.S. mobile carriers (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, etc.) require all businesses to register before sending SMS messages to U.S. numbers.

Registration ensures:

  • Higher message deliverability
  • Fewer blocked messages
  • Compliance with messaging rules

Register for SMS through VXT

The registration process involves three steps: Fill out the form → Application reviewed by VXT → Submission to regulators

  1. Fill out the VXT SMS Registration Form: To start, you must complete our SMS registration form. You will be asked for:
    • Your business details
    • Your website or public social media page
    • How your customers opt in to receive SMS
    • Sample messages you intend to send
    • Your business registration number (EIN or equivalent)

Note: If you are not based in the United States, you can enter the appropriate business identifier from your country (see FAQs below).

  2. VXT reviews your application: Once you submit the form, our team reviews the information you provided and checks that your website and SMS consent method align with the regulator's current standards. If we identify any potential issues, we will reach out and suggest updates. Our goal is to catch issues early so that your application has a higher chance of being approved.
  3. VXT submits your application: After the review is complete, we submit your registration to our messaging provider (Twilio). Our provider will then forward the application to the carriers and their regulatory partners for final review.

How VXT Assists With Your Registration

Once you complete the SMS registration form, our team performs an internal review before submitting your application.

During this review, we may:

  • Check that your business information is complete
  • Confirm your website or social page is accessible
  • Review your Privacy Policy and Terms of Service pages
  • Review your SMS opt-in/consent method for compliance
  • Flag potential issues that could lead to rejection

If we identify issues, we will contact you with suggested updates before submitting the application.

However, it is important to note that approval decisions are made by carriers and their regulatory partners, not by VXT. Because the review process can change and may include criteria not always documented, we can't guarantee approval. Our goal is to reduce the likelihood of rejection by aligning submissions with the most recent known requirements.

Privacy Policy and Terms Requirements

Your website must contain two publicly accessible pages.

Privacy Policy

Your Privacy Policy must:

  • Be publicly accessible on your website
  • Be linked in your SMS opt-in form
  • Explain how customer data is used

It must also include this statement:

"Text messaging originator opt-in data and consent will not be shared with any third parties, excluding aggregators and providers of the text messaging services."

Terms of Service

Your website must also include a Terms of Service (or Terms & Conditions) page.

This page should include:

  • Business name
  • Description of the messages you send
  • Message frequency disclosure
  • "Message and data rates may apply" disclosure
  • STOP opt-out instructions
  • HELP instructions
  • Contact information
  • Link to your Privacy Policy
  • Carrier liability statement

"Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages."

SMS Opt-In Requirements

Customers must explicitly agree to receive SMS messages before you can send them messages.

Acceptable opt-in methods include:

  • A checkbox on a website form
  • A signed contract that includes SMS consent
  • A sign-up form with SMS consent
  • A keyword customers text to opt in

Your opt-in must include

A compliant SMS consent section must clearly show:

  • Your business name
  • The types of messages you will send
  • Message frequency disclosure
  • "Message and data rates may apply."
  • Instructions to opt out (e.g., "Reply STOP to unsubscribe")
  • Instructions for help (e.g., "Reply HELP for assistance")
  • Links to your Privacy Policy and Terms of Service

Important SMS consent rules

Your SMS opt-in must follow these rules:

  • SMS consent must be optional
  • Phone numbers cannot be required to submit a form
  • SMS consent cannot be bundled with other services
  • SMS checkboxes must not be pre-checked
  • If you send marketing messages, marketing consent must be separate from service messages

SMS Opt-In Confirmation Message

After a user opts in, they should receive a confirmation message such as:

"CompanyName: Thanks for signing up for SMS updates. Msg frequency varies. Msg & data rates may apply. Reply HELP for help, STOP to opt out.

Expected Registration Duration

Registration typically takes 2–3 weeks, depending on how quickly carriers complete their review and whether additional details are needed.

⚠️ Important: The regulator's review process can sometimes be unpredictable. Even when submissions follow known guidelines, additional changes may still be requested. If that happens, our team will contact you to help update the application and resubmit it.

Templates (Recommended)

To make this process easier, we provide templates that already contain the required language for SMS compliance. You can copy and paste these templates and update them with your business details.

Templates include:

  • Privacy Policy template
  • Terms of Service template
  • SMS opt-in form template

FAQs

  • I don't have an EIN — what should I do?

If you don't have a U.S. Employer Identification Number (EIN), you can use the appropriate equivalent from your country:

Country Business Identifier
Canada Canadian Business Number (CBN)
Great Britain Company Number
Australia Company Number from ASIC (ACN), VAT number
Other countries Any official business registration number
  • I am a sole proprietor — what do I need to provide?

Sole proprietors should fill out the form normally but must also provide a phone number that is not in VXT, as our provider will send a verification code to that number.

Note: Sole proprietors can register only one SMS-enabled phone number.

  • I already registered my number with my previous carrier — do I need to register again?

Yes. 10DLC registrations are tied to the messaging platform and provider, not to the phone number itself. This means that even if your number was previously registered with another carrier or provider, you must submit a new registration through VXT.

Each messaging platform is required to independently register campaigns through TCR (The Campaign Registry), regardless of any prior approvals you may have had elsewhere.
